Colleges in Nevada

Universities and colleges in Nevada are governed by an elected Board of Regents. Each member is elected to serve a six - year term. The 13 elected Regents approve budgets for all Nevada schools of higher education and set the policies for all Nevada colleges. Eight meetings are held each year in addition to committee meetings. Meetings are rotated throughout the different schools in Nevada.

The Nevada System of Higher Education(NSHE)was formerly known as the University and Community College System of Nevada. It was established in 1968 to govern all state-supported colleges in Nebraska. The system is comprised of one state college, four community colleges, two research universities that grant doctorals and one research institute. The state hosts five non-profit private institutes and 12 for-profit private institutes.

Five of Nevada's top colleges and universities are the University of Nevada, Nevada State College, Great Basin College, Everest College, and the College of Southern Nevada.

The University of Nevada was established in 1957 in Las Vegas. It is a popular school for engineering, hospitality and English programs. The university's College for Liberal Arts and Science and College of Business and Fine Arts are accredited by the Northwest Commission of Colleges and Universities.

Nevada State College in Henderson was founded in 2002. It includes a School of Education, School of Nursing, a School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, a Bachelor of Applied Sciences and more.

Great Basin College has campuses located in Battle Mountain, Elko, Ely, Pahrump and Winnemucca. This state-of-the-art college highlights the newest high-tech instructional methods. Nevada residents can earn an Associate's degree or a Bachelor's degree on these campuses. It also offers certain certification programs.

Everest College has several locations and is one of the best Nevada colleges. Financial aid is offered for all who qualify. Additional services include a resource center with internet access, tutoring and internships. Some of the programs of study are business administration, paralegal, accounting and criminal justice.

Clark County's College of Southern Nevada is one the largest colleges in Nevada. It offers both a two-year or four-year degree program and a program in Dental Hygiene. This college offers job training in over 75 fields and 200 degree and technical courses.

Economy

In 2010, the Bureau of Economic Analysis estimated the state of Nevada's gross national product (GNP) at $126 billion. In 2009, personal per capita income was $38,578 and ranked 19th nationally.

The economy of the state has been tied to what is termed "vice industries" for many years such as easy divorces, prizefighting and gambling. However, Nevada was founded on the mining industry.

The state is filled with resort areas such as Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, Reno and Laughlin that attract visitors and gamblers from all over the states and around the world. In 2008, a total of 266 casinos took in $12 billion in gaming revenue. Non-gaming revenue was around $13 billion.

Agriculture plays a role in the state's economy. Outputs include cattle, alfalfa, hay, dairy products, potatoes and onions. Industries in the state include tourism, machinery, mining, printing and publishing, electrical equipment and food processing.

Gold is by far the most important and valuable mining output with $2.84 billion worth mined in 2004. Silver is the second most valuable mining output at $69 million mined in the same year. Other minerals mined include copper, gypsum, diatomite, aggregates and lithium.

The hospitality industry continues to thrive in Nevada. It has more hotel rooms per capita than any other state. This industry will continue to produce jobs and support the economy of the state.
