The University of South Dakota

This public university, located in Vermillion, has an undergraduate enrollment of around 7,500. South Dakota State University

With an undergraduate enrollment of almost 11,000, South Dakota State is the largest college in the state. Some of the majors include engineering, education, journalism, music and computer science. The school offers almost 200 fields of study. Located in Brookings, the school offers over 200 student organizations in which to participate. The college is well-known for The Pride of the Dakotas, the school's marching band that has participated in the Rose Parade, NFL games and presidential inaugurations.

Black Hills State University

Situated in Spearfish, this university has an enrollment of around 4,000. You can choose from almost 60 different degree programs, and some of the popular majors include art, elementary education, music, psychology and speech communications. The campus is in a rural community, and the area of the state is gorgeous. Some of the student activities consist of a theatre society, a student-run radio and a circus club. The school is a research university, and the region is home to one of the biggest herbariums on the planet.

Dakota State University

Even though this school has an undergraduate enrollment of only around 3,000, it offers a quality education. You can choose the Arts and Science program, or you can choose the education program. The school focuses on technology and skill-oriented fields of study. Tablet PCs are permitted in the classroom.

Economy

Tourism and agriculture are some of the major factors in the economy of South Dakota. Some of the crops include corn, soybean, oats and wheat. The state is the country's second-leading producer of sunflower seed. Mount Rushmore and the attractions near the Black Hills contribute to the state's tourism industry. Meat packing and food processing are also two of the main industries of South Dakota. Gold is an important mineral in the state.

The unemployment rate in South Dakota is around 4.3 percent, way below the national average. Jobs are expected to increase up to 40 percent, which is above the national average. Retail, finance and healthcare industries are expected hire the most individuals over the next few years. After you graduate from a South Dakota school, the job outlook is promising.

About South Dakota

The summers in the state are very nice; however, the winters can get extremely cold and snowy. The average temperature in January is around 13 degrees, and the average temperature in July is about 75 degrees. The heaviest snowfall normally occurs in November, and frequent thunderstorms can occur during the summer months. The state receives about 15 inches of rain each year.

Attractions

Mount Rushmore is one of the most popular attractions in the state. The mountain contains the faces of Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson and Roosevelt carved in stone. The mountain is located in The Black Hills, the highest group of mountains east of the Rocky Mountains. Other attractions in the state include the Badlands, Corn Palace and Crazy Horse Memorial.
