Oceanside is a coastal town situated in San Diego County between San Diego and Los Angeles. The area contains almost four miles of beach, and the weather is gorgeous throughout the year. The city is also home to MiraCosta College, an outstanding community college in California.
Classes at MiraCosta College started in 1934 at a wing at Oceanside High School. When the school was established, it had 122 students and 20 faculty members, and the institution provided 16 courses. In 1964, the school was moved to its present location atop a hill. MiraCosta is Spanish for "behold the coast" and refers to the gorgeous ocean and stunning mountain views that can be seen from the campus. Enrollment continues to rise each year at the institution. The class sizes at the school range from 30 to 45 students, and the number of students enrolled is around 11,000. Some of the most popular majors include English, real estate, nursing, psychology, communication, art and law enforcement.
The college contains modern and up to date facilities. Some of the accommodations on the campus include a child development facility, a horticulture complex and a 240-seat theater. The campus also consists of a library, a concert hall and a creative arts complex. The student center contains a cafeteria, a bookstore and an art gallery.
The college is home to a significant amount of computers that are available for the students to use. You can receive free tutoring in most subjects, and the institution offers a National Honor Society and an Honors Scholars Program. The noontime portion of the day is sometimes considered college hour. During this time, many cultural events and performing arts events take place. Almost 35 clubs meet frequently and are an integral part of the life on the campus. Throughout the year, MiraCosta holds numerous arts, music, theater, dance and film events. In addition, the athletic teams participate in the Pacific Coast Conference. The sports offered at the college include basketball, soccer and surfing. Intramural sports are also available.
Two of the distinguished alumni of the college include Adam Brody and Kevin Towers. Brody appears in the television series The OC, and Towers is the general manager of MLB's the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The world-famous San Diego Zoo is near the college, and the San Diego Wild Animal Park is in close proximity to the campus. You can also visit the Oceanside Museum of Art and the California Surf Museum. The Oceanside Pier is a great place to fish, and no fishing license is required. You can also enjoy visiting the beach where you can swim, surf and camp.
