Butte College was founded in 1967 in the city of Oroville, California which is located approximately 80 miles from Sacramento. The city of Oroville has a population of just over 15,500 residents and sits on the banks of the Feather River. The city has recently become a great commercial area with businesses, restaurants and shopping. It is also the home of The Mother Orange Tree, the oldest living orange tree in California.
The school offers Associate degrees for transfer, Associates degrees as a career based option and a variety of certification programs. The transfer degrees are offered in 19 different disciplines and are eligible for transfer to the California State University and University of California four-year universities. The courses may also be eligible in whole or in part to be transferred to other major universities located throughout the country. The most popular programs are Business Administration, Communications and Theater Arts.
The Butte College athletic program participates in a total of 13 intercollegiate sports with NJCAA. There are six sports for men (basketball, cross country, baseball, football, soccer, track and field) and seven for women (cross country, soccer, basketball, softball, golf, track and field, and volleyball). The school's nickname is the Roadrunners. They participate in the following conferences depending on the sport; Big 8, Golden Valley and the Northern California Football Alliance. Over the years, the school has claimed divisional and regional championships in many of the programs.
The campus provides ample opportunity for students to participate in extracurricular activities. They are a wide range of clubs and student organizations available such as debate teams, intramural sports, academic based clubs and social clubs.
The list of famous includes Larry Allen (future Hall of Fame pro football player), Kyle Lohse (major league pitcher), Aaron Rogers (NFL quarterback and league MVP) and Ken Grossman (founder of the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company).
