Dongguk Royal University (DRU) is one of the oldest and most rapidly growing universities dedicated to Oriental Medicine in the entire United States. Located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles just miles away from the pristine beaches of Santa Monica, DRU provides a culturally diverse and stimulating environment within a large, vibrant Chinese and Korean community. Dongguk Royal University is comprised of the School of Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture, as well as the Oriental Medical Center (OMC) that provides students with valuable clinical experiences. Services are organized into three main departments, which are Acupuncture, Internal Medicine, and Tui-na or Chinese massage therapy.
Founded in 1979, the Dongguk Royal University became one of the first established schools of Oriental Medicine in America, second only to the New England School of Acupuncture. The university was created from the combination of one of South Korea's most prestigious institutions at Dongguk University with Royal University in Los Angeles. Through a world-class education bridge between the East and West, DRU is one of the few Buddhist affiliated universities in the world. Although the campus is independent, it retains its affiliations with the Dongguk University in South Korea for a unique Exchange Program for global learning. So far, DRU has built a strong dynamic and intellectual community of more than 1,800 alumni practicing all Oriental Medicine all over the world.
Dongguk University offers students two distinct programs at the graduate level, the Master of Science in Oriental Medicine and the Doctor in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Through a comprehensive curriculum of 2,130 hours, the Master's program involves intensive coursework in Oriental Medicine theory, acupuncture, herbology, Western Medicine, Chinese massage therapy, ethical practices, and a 960-hour clinical internship. The doctorate training program consists of 1,290 total hours, including a clinical residency, preceptorship, mentorship, professional development, clinical evaluation, and 640 hours of didactic theory coursework.
Providing unprecedented higher learning opportunities for students of diverse backgrounds, DRU offers academic programs in English, Korean, or Chinese. Since the university is fully approved by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, non-immigrant international students are welcome to attend with a valid visa. Dongguk Royal University is also nationally recognized and institutionally accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM). It has also been authorized by the State of California Education Code and the Medical Board of California's Acupuncture Committee. DRU is a notable contributing member of the prestigious Council of Colleges of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, which qualifies graduates to sit for the California Acupuncture Licensing Exam.
