Bellevue Community College was founded in 1966 in the city of Bellevue, Washington. Bellevue is a suburb of Seattle, Washington. Based on the 2010 census, the city has a population of 122,363 residents. According to CNNMoney, Bellevue was voted the number one place to start a business in 2008. The economy is supported by a large number of technology companies headquartered there including Nintendo and Microsoft. The city is renowned for their involvement in cultural events and the arts. They are several significant museums and the city plays host to the very popular Bellevue Arts and Crafts Fair.
Bellevue Community College is the third largest school for higher education in the state. They are ranked behind only Washington University and Washington State University. The university offers transferable two-year degrees, certification programs and continuing education programs. Their degree programs are targeted in a five areas; Arts and Humanities, Health Sciences, Education and Wellness, Business and Information Technology and Social Science.
In 2007, the school began offering four year degrees in Radiation and Interior Design. For students who wish to avoid commuting hassles, the school does offer a catalog of online courses. In the past 10 years, the college has expanded by building two satellite campuses, the North Campus and the East Campus. Bellevue received their accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities in 1970.
The school participates in organized sports through the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges in sports such as volleyball, soccer, golf, baseball, basketball and gymnastics. The team nickname is the Bruins. Bellevue offers over 120 student clubs and organizations in order to keep students involved in the school.
The short list of distinguished alumni includes James Caviezel (Actor in "The Passion of the Christ", "The Red Thin Line" and on the TV series "Person of Interest"), Evan Meek (professional baseball player) and Deb Caletti (Award-winning author).
