THE TEACHERS' UNIONS |
||
![]() |
The National Education Association (NEA) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) are
two of the largest unions in the United States, with a combined membership of over three
million. How and to what end these unions wield their considerable power is a subject of
great importance to the nation's parents and political leaders. There is no better source
on this issue than Dr. Myron Lieberman's recent book, The Teacher
Unions. There is no doubt that one of the goals of the NEA and AFT leadership is to provide good quality educational services to the nation's children. It is equally obvious that, as union leaders, they also have an obligation to promote the interests of their members. In some cases, unfortunately, these obligations can conflict with one another, as Dr. Lieberman demonstrates. There are also situations in which the personal interests of the union leadership can come into conflict with the interests of individual teachers, a subject addressed in The Teacher Unions. One such case has been making news in the state of Washington. |
