Market Education in Developing Countries

While most rich countries have similar systems of state-run, fully state-funded schooling, that is not the case in the developing world. Countries from India to Indonesia have a much wider range of education systems, including many variations on the theme of competitive, parent-driven education markets.
In two recent papers, Andrew Coulson reviews the research on educational conditions and outcomes in these nations. The first paper tests the conclusions of Coulson's book Market Education: The Unknown History against the evidence of developing countries. The second paper tries to identify policies that would accelerate educational access and quality in those countries.
Based on these papers, it's undeniable that the rich world has a lot to learn from the experiences of less developed nations.
