Indiana is a state situated in the Great Lakes region of the United States. The citizens of the state are known as The Hoosiers, and the people are considered friendly and welcoming. Indianapolis is the state's capitol and largest city. Many people also choose to attend college in the state. Indiana is home to some of the top-ranked institutions in the country.

Schools in Indiana have a huge number of students from out of state; therefore, many people call the state the "Brain Bank of the Midwest." Many international students also attend Indiana colleges. Some of the most popular schools in Indiana include:

Purdue University

People from all over the globe attend Purdue University. Located in West Lafayette, Pursue is home to more than 40,000 students, making it the second largest school in Indiana. The most popular program at the college is engineering as about 20% of all students are enrolled in the program. It is a research school as the University does research in fields such as business, education, technology and healthcare. You can find close to 1000 student activities to participate in while you are in school. Historically, Purdue has fared well at the NCAA basketball tournament. After you complete your undergraduate degree, you can join the other graduates in running through a campus fountain.

Indiana University

This school in Bloomington has an enrollment of just over 42,000 students, making it the largest college in Indiana. Some of the most popular degrees include business, management and marketing. The school does not have an official mascot, so all sports teams are known as The Hoosiers. The Hoosiers have one of the most successful men's basketball programs in the country.

University of Notre Dame

This private Catholic school is ranked as one of the best colleges in the country. In order to be accepted into the college, you must have an exceptional academic record. Finance and accounting are two of the most popular programs at the school, and many of the students study abroad for at least one semester. The enrollment of the college is about 12,000. The Fighting Irish have successful football and basketball programs. Located in South Bend, the campus is just stunning.

Ball State University

The most popular profession at this Indiana school is in the healthcare profession. Other top degrees include education, architecture and nursing. The college also offers motorsport engineering as a major. The enrollment of the university sits at almost 20,000; however, the number of students who attend the school increases each year. Talk show host David Letterman attended Ball State University.

Butler University

This private university is located in Indianapolis. It is home to almost 4,000 students, and the school offers numerous degree options. While in school, you can participate in athletics, arts or student organizations. Even though it is small, this college is considered one of the best in the country.

About Indiana State

Agriculture is one of the main contributors to the state's economy. Corn, soybeans, hogs, dairy products and eggs are the prominent agriculture products in Indiana. Wheat, hay and tomatoes are also important crops in the state. Metals and other manufacturing industries have also increased since World War II. Indiana produces much of the country's steel, and coal, natural gas, timber, stone and clay are also important natural resources in the state.

Employment in Indiana

The unemployment rate in Indiana sits at 8.4 percent, which is above the national average. However, the state is expected to see a job increase. The occupations predicted to see the highest number of job openings is for retail sales persons, cashiers and waiters and waitresses. Nursing jobs are also expected to be in demand. Honda has made the decision to locate in Indiana, so more jobs will be available in the state. The biomedical engineer profession is the fastest growing profession in the state. The average household income in the state is about $38,000 annually, which is below the national average. Management positions pay the highest salary in the state, and jobs in the food preparation industry pay the lowest salary.

Sports in Indiana

High school basketball and the Indianapolis 500 are the two main sports events in the state. During basketball season, the residents of Indiana spend much of their free time watching a high school basketball game. Schools from all sizes compete in the same tournament, so it is a huge accomplishment for a small school to win the state tournament. The movie The Hoosiers starring Gene Hackman depicted the true story of the Milan team who won the Indiana state basketball tournament with only an enrollment of 1600. Numerous basketball players from Indiana go on to compete in the NBA.

The Indianapolis 500 is the most prestigious event in car racing. The event takes place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and more than 250,000 people attend the spectacle. The racetrack is incredible.

Indiana Attractions

The most popular attraction in the city is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This racetrack began in 1909 and hosts the Indianapolis 500, the Brickyard 400 and the Red Bull Indianapolis GP. A trip to the venue is full of speed, loud sounds and thrills. If you visit during a time the cars are not racing, you can visit the IMS Hall of Fame Museum. You can also enjoy the 18 hole golf course.

Another fun attraction in the state is the Indianapolis Zoo. You can see over 2000 fascinating animals, and you can visit the aquarium and botanic garden. You can also experience a fantastic dolphin show.

Other attractions in the state include the Allen Country War Memorial Coliseum, Trump Casino and Indiana Dunes State Park. The College Football Hall of Fame is also located in the state. Indiana is full of exciting things to do; therefore, attending college in the state will be an educational and fun experience.
