Schools in Missouri that offer higher education include the University of Missouri system, public universities, private colleges and universities, community colleges, theological seminaries and schools of special focus. Missouri colleges and universities operate under the direction of the Missouri Department of Higher Education. Public Missouri colleges and universities in the University of Missouri system include 13 baccalaureate universities and 20 associate's colleges. The University of Science and Technology is located in Rolla. It has the distinction of being the first tech school west of the Mississippi. It is popular for the outdoor activities provided in the beautiful Ozarks.

The University of Missouri at Columbia is a public research university. The largest of all Missouri colleges, it is a member of the Association of American Universities because of its strong research programs.
In 2006, the Bureau of Economic Analysis estimated Missouri's gross state product(GSP)at $225.9 billion and personal per capita income at #32,705 ranking 26th in the nation. The state's major industries are transportation equipment, aerospace, food processing, chemicals, electrical equipment, printing and publishing, light manufacturing and beer.
Missouri's agricultural products are important to the nation. It ranks sixth in the production of hogs for pork and seventh in cattle for beef. Other products are soybeans, dairy products, corn, hay, poultry, cotton, sorghum, eggs and rice. The number of farms was second only to Texas in 2001 with 108,000 throughout the state. The state also has a wine industry that is growing rapidly.
Missouri is the leading US state for the mining of lead. The state also ranks near the top for the production of lime, Portland cement's key ingredient. The science and biotechnology field is growing and providing jobs for the state's residents. Monsanto in St' Louis is the nation's largest gene company and employs many workers.
Missouri is the only US state that has two federal reserve banks. Tourism and wholesale/retail trade also provides jobs. In 2012, the unemployment rate was 7.3 percent, lower than the national average of 8.2 percent.
