San Diego City College

San Diego, CA

Brief Description

Situated in the center of downtown San Diego on a 60-acre urban campus of 40 buildings surrounded by the I-5 freeway in southern California, San Diego City College is a comprehensive public two-year community college. As one of the 109 other public colleges in the California Community College system, City College is a truly multicultural institution that is committed to providing open access to meet the ever-changing educational, cultural, and economic needs of the urban core of San Diego.

Currently celebrating its centennial year, San Diego City College was first established in 1914 when the Board of Education authorized the foundation of post-secondary classes for the youth of the San Diego metropolitan area. As the first community college in San Diego and the third in California, the school was initially split into three entities for the San Diego Vocational High School, San Diego College of Arts and Sciences, and the San Diego Evening Junior College. By the 1970s, massive enrollment increases resulted in a major expansion project to merge the colleges into one system to accommodate over 16,000 students each semester.

With over 100 majors to choose from, San Diego City College is fully accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges in the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). With courses provided in general, lower-division, and occupational or career education, City College grants associates degree, certificate, and transfer degree programs. Among the most popular disciplines available at San Diego City College are alcohol and drug abuse counseling, cooling and heating technologies, cosmetology, graphic design, machinery manufacturing, nursing, radio and television broadcasting, and small business operations.

Since City College understands how important it is for students to get involved in campus life to build long-lasting professional and personal connections, the Inter Club Council is home to more than 25 recognized student clubs in a wide range of special interests. For those who are athletically inclined, the San Diego City College Knights sponsor intercollegiate teams in badminton, baseball, basketball, cross country, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball for competition in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference (PCAC) of the CCCAA. Some of the most notable former Knights include film director Cameron Crowe, actor Cleavon Little, NFL Pete Adams, Costco CEO James Sinegal, and MLB player Sergio Mitre.
