In 1969, the institution began as a training facility for the law enforcement personnel and firefighters of San Diego. Individuals who earn an associate's degree at San Diego Miramar College earn about $8500 more a year than high school graduates. The SAGE is an award-winning newspaper that the school offers, and the institution is home to a fitness center on campus. Jerry Sanders, San Diego mayor and Phil Esbenshade, professional skateboarder and deputy district attorney attended the college. The institution has produced notable paralegals, law enforcement personnel and firefighters. Many students go on to graduate from a four-year institution.
