Central Connecticut State University was founded in 1849 in New Britain, Connecticut. The city is located about 7 miles from Hartford and has a population of just over 73,000. The city's economy is made up of both the manufacturing and service sectors. The city provides access to the Arts through several excellent museums and theaters. The city also has a minor league baseball franchise as well as entertainment and shopping areas.
CCSU offers approximately 71 different Bachelor's degrees and several special studies curriculum. The school is divided into four separate schools based on discipline: The School of Education & Professional Studies, the School of Engineering & Technology, the Ammon School of Arts & Science, and the School of Business. The most popular disciplines are Business and Marketing, Psychology, Engineering, Communications, English, and Biology. According to the Princeton Review of 2006, the Honors program was considered to be "absolutely outstanding". Graduate degrees are offered in many of the major disciplines with the Master's in Business being one of the more popular programs.
The athletic department supports 16 intercollegiate programs including 7 for men and 9 for women. They cover major sports such as basketball, baseball, football, golf, soccer and volleyball. The school's nickname is the Blue Devils. CCSU is a registered member of the NCAA as a Division I (championship section) aligned with the Northeast Conference.
