Broward Community College was founded in 1959 in the Miami area of Florida. This is a "state" college with 11 different campuses or learning centers located in the areas of Fort Lauderdale, Davie, Coconut Creek, Dania Beach, Miramar, Pembroke Pines, Weston and Coral Springs. All of the Miami area is a hotbed of activity with the beaches, restaurants, entertainment, hotels and night clubs.
Broward offers two-year Associates degrees in approximately 75 different majors. With it's designation as a state school, they are permitted to award four-years degrees. Therefore, they also offer 12 Bachelor degree programs as well as a variety of certification programs. As a whole, the college is particularly strong in the areas of Business Management, Environmental Science and Education. They also have an extensive list of classes that can be taken online. According to the Washington D.C.-based Aspen Institute, the school is ranked in the top 10 of community colleges from around the nation. The school has also received recognition as one of the top schools for awarding Associates degrees to minorities.
The Broward Community College athletic department supports eight NJCAA sports programs. For men, they field teams in basketball, soccer and baseball. For women, they have tennis, volleyball, softball, basketball and soccer. Over the years, the school has won many regional, state-wide and national titles. The school's nickname is the Seahawks.
Student life on the three campuses in active and exciting. The school promotes a wide variety of clubs and organizations in areas such as academics, sports, performing arts and community events. The athletic department sponsors many organized intramural leagues that are open to all students. The campuses have fitness centers, stores and meeting facilities for students.
The esteemed alunmi include Rosemary Homeister, Jr. (American jockey), Mat Latos (Major League Baseball pitcher), Brian Warner (rock singer better known as Marilyn Manson), Rita Mae Brown (Author, poet and screenwriter) and Nancy Valen (actress).
