Based in the urban center of Savannah conveniently just off I-95 with satellite locations in Hinesville, Effingham, Crossroads Business Park, and the Fort Stewart Army Base, Savannah Technical College serves the coastal Georgia region with quality career-oriented and market-driven technical education. As a vibrant member of the Technical College System of Georgia governed by a local board of directors, Savannah Tech provides access to post-secondary educational opportunities for more than 4,500 credit students from Bryan, Chatham, Effingham, and Liberty counties.
Established in 1929 as the Opportunity School through the sponsorship of the Savannah Chamber of Commerce, the school initially provided continuing education courses and shop classes for boys. After the school quickly outgrew its first quarters, it was combined with the Harris Area Trade School to officially become the Savannah Area Vocational-Technical School. As the surrounding city continued to expand, the school officially changed to the Savannah Technical College and became the third fastest-growing two-year college in the nation by 2002.
Fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), Savannah Tech offers nearly 150 different instructional programs, including adult, industry-specific, ESL, and continuing education. Students can choose to pursue a diploma, certificate, or associate's degree in the academic divisions of Aviation Technology, Business and Technology, Public Services, Industrial Technology, Economic Development, General Studies, and Health Sciences. After degree completion, it is common for graduates to transfer to local Georgia four-year colleges to further their education with a bachelor's degree.
In order to help students achieve their fullest potential, Savannah Technical College provides a unique Student Enrichment Center, where students can benefit from free professional or peer tutoring and workshops on study strategies. Furthermore, Savannah Tech offers all enrolled students with financial need the opportunity to participate in the Georgia Hope Program to receive the needed financial aid to afford the tuition that is around $1,275 for full-time studies each semester.
Since Savannah Tech understands how important it is for students to be involved and engaged in on-campus activities, there are more than 28 student organizations held on campus, ranging from Cosmetology and Nail Technician Club to Practical Nursing Club and the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS). While there are presently no intramural sports offered, the Savannah Tech Panthers do have a men's and a women's varsity basketball team that competes in Division I of the NJCAA.
