First approved by the Illinois Junior College Board as a community college for serving the southwestern suburbs of Chicago in 1966, Moraine Valley Community College was named in reference to its central location where the Valparaiso and Tinley moraines meet to form a valley. By 1973, Moraine Valley opened the first permanent campus structure and becomes the community college in Illinois to offer a two-year special education program. While the enrollment climbs above 10,000 due to the formation of a revolutionary Returning Woman Program, MVCC continues its academic excellence for providing affordable career training in hottest fields.
With an outstanding reputation as one of the nation's premier two-year institutions, Moraine Valley Community College is currently ranked within the top three percent of the 2,839 two and four-year U.S. institutions granting associate degrees. Fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association (NCA), MVCC offers more than 50 associates degree programs, ranging from culinary arts management and information technology to nursing and homeland security. Outside of the classroom, Moraine Valley Community College offers around 40 different student club organizations related to special academic interests, religion, diversity, community service, student government, and intramural sports. Within the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference of the NJCAA, the Moraine Valley Cyclones can participate in intercollegiate sports competition for men's baseball, cross country, basketball, golf, and soccer as well as women's basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, and volleyball. Of all the sports teams at MVCC, the women's basketball team has been particularly dominate, winning the last four conference championships.
