Brief Description

Ball State University was founded in 1918 in the city of Muncie. The city of Muncie is located just to the northeast of Indianapolis. It has a population of just over 70,000 residents. The community's economy relies very heavily on the manufacturing industry (Ball Corporation) and Ball State University. The social culture is considered blue collar and conservative.

The university offers a wide range and variety of educational opportunities, They have 175 bachelor's degrees programs, 103 master's degree programs and 17 doctoral degree programs. They also offer study-abroad programs, pre-professional programs and internship opportunities. In 2011, U.S. News & World Report ranked Ball State as the number eight "up and coming" college/university in the country.

In recent years, the university has received national acclaim and rankings for several programs. Their digital design and fabrication program was recently ranked in the top three in the nation by Architect Magazine. Also, their social justice program is one of only six programs in the country considered to be fully dedicated to the industry.

The athletic department competes in a full slate of Division I sports. The team nickname is the Cardinals. In most sports, they are members of the Mid-American Conference. Many of the major sports teams were inaugurated in the mid-1920s and have won many conference championships along the way.

The campus has 31 residence halls with a wide range of sororities and fraternities available on campus. With a variety of academic and social clubs available for students, campus life is very active. The campus offers free entertainment on Saturday nights and intramural sports in order to assure the university is helping to mold well rounded individuals.

The university has produced several alumni who have made significant contributions. They include Jim Davis (cartoonist of Garfield), Scott Halberstadt (actor in Nickelodeon's Drake and Josh), David Letterman (comedian and host of the Late Show with David Letterman) and Doug Jones (actor in Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth, Hocus Pocus).
