Since its inception in 1911 as the Fresno State Normal School for educating competent teachers, Cal State Fresno has expanded its horizons to offers 60 bachelor's degree, 45 master's degree, three doctoral, and 12 graduate certificate programs accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Currently, Fresno State stands out for having some of the best degree programs in the nation for nursing, physical therapy, education, rehabilitation counseling, social work, business administration, and speech pathology.

Renowned for having the first university-based commercial winery in the United States, Fresno State is considered one of the best equipped agricultural facilities in the West with student-made wines winning over 300 awards in the last decade. Along with its nationally ranked Top 10 Equestrian team, the Fresno State Bulldogs are members of the Mountain West Conference for competition in NCAA Division I with 18 intercollegiate varsity teams. Notable former Bulldogs include actor Robert Beltran, actress Noreen Corcoran, poet William Everson, astronaut Rick Husband, and NBA player Paul George.
