Standing proudly on a 300-acre urban campus covered with over 3,500 trees along the American River Parkway in the state's capital city, California State University – Sacramento is a vibrant comprehensive public institution with a diverse community of more than 28,000 students. Consistently recognized as one of the nation's best higher education values with low tuition fees, Sacramento State is currently ranked as the 66th best college and 22nd top public school in the West by the U.S. News and World Report.

As the eleventh oldest school in the 23 campus state university system, the school was originally founded as Sacramento State College in 1947 during a time of intense demand for higher education after World War II. Now fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), Cal State Sacramento offers 151 bachelor's degree, 69 master's degree, 28 teaching credential, and two doctoral degree programs. Sacramento State is perhaps best known for its thriving Division of Criminal Justice, which remains one of the largest such programs in North American with nearly 1,800 students each year.

Outside the classroom, California State University – Sacramento is home to more than 300 recognized student organizations, including over 20 fraternities and sororities. For competition in the NCAA Division I Big Sky Conference, students can also join one of the 20 green and gold varsity teams fielded by the Sacramento State Hornets. Some of the most notable former Hornets include actor Tom Hanks, news anchor Rene Syler, comedian Brian Posehn, and Grammy Award-winner Bobby McFerrin.
