Toledo. The city has a population of 30,028 based on the 2010 census. The city has a very rural feel with mostly small businesses. The people are generally considered blue collar. Since 1967, Bowling Green has been hosting the National Tractor Pulling Championships.
Bowling Green State is comprised of eight academic colleges. They offer over 200 undergraduate degree programs as well as master's and doctorate programs. The university does extensive research is the areas of Psychology, Sociology, Energy and Human Development. The College of Education and Human Development offers a very highly regarded teaching program. Bowling Green was the very first public university to offer a PhD program in photochemical science.
The Bowling Green Falcons are members of the Mid-American Conference in Division I of the NCAA. They support a total of 17 sports programs for men and women. The school is one of only 12 Division I schools to offer football, basketball (men's and women's) and hockey. The most successful programs are the men's football programs which has qualified for a BCS Bowl game twice in the last six years and the women's basketball program which won several conference championships in the last nine years.
An active campus life is provided for the approximately 6,000 students who live on campus in the 14 University residence halls within 9 residential complexes. There are approximated 40 chapters of fraternities and sororities located on the grounds. The school has approximately 300 student groups covering various areas like sports, hobbies and academics.
Bowling Green has a prominent group of alumni that includes James Baldwin (famous author/poet), Bernie Casey (NFL player, actor), Orel Hershiser (former MLB player), Scott Hamilton (Olympic gold medalist in figure skating) and Nate Thurmond (seven-time NBA All-Star).
