Located on a suburban campus in the town of Hayward in the East Bay area of California, Chabot College is a comprehensive community college that serves the educational needs of residents of Alameda County, including the district communities of Hayward, Castro Valley, San Leandro, San Lorenzo, and Union City. Home to a diverse community of more than 14,800 students from various backgrounds, Chabot College is a part of the large Chabot-Las Positas Community College District.
As the first college opened by the Chabot-Las Positas Community College District in 1961, Chabot College initially opened for classes to an enrollment of 1,163 students on a temporary 7.5 acre location in the heart of San Leandro. By 1965, the college was transferred to its permanent 94-acre campus site on Hesperian Boulevard. Since its inception, Chabot College has been a number one source in the region for technical and career degrees, transfer education programs to four-year universities, general education, basic skills instruction, English as a Second Language (ESL) courses, and continuing education programs.
Fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), Chabot College offers over 175 majors of study and awards more than 100 associate degrees in a wide range of academic or career interests. The college consists of six academic divisions in Applied Technology, Business, Language Arts, Math and Sciences, Physical Education and Health, and Social Sciences. Among the most popular degree programs offered as in accounting, retail management, business management, real estate, entrepreneurship, and healthcare services.
In order to encourage students to get involved in campus life, Chabot College hosts over 25 student organizations ranging from the Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor Society and Collegiate DECA Club to the Hip Hop Spot and the KCRH Radio DJ Club. Nicknamed the Gladiators, Chabot College is home to 16 intercollegiate varsity teams in football, soccer, volleyball, wrestling, basketball, baseball, golf, softball, swimming, tennis, and track and field for competition in the NCJAA Coast Conference. Some of the most notable former Gladiators are Metallica bassist Cliff Burton, MLB pitcher Mark Davis, award-winning actor Tom Hanks, best-selling author Bruce Henderson, and Olympian Mike McRae.
