Washington, DC

Brief Description

An 1893 Act of Congress brought the American University into being. It's a private institution with degree programs ranging from bachelor's to doctorates. American University has been called "the most politically active school," and with its location in Washington, D.C., its political involvement comes as no surprise.

American University features six schools. In the College of Arts & Sciences, students engage in programs dedicated to the humanities and social sciences. The Kogod School of Business is recognized for its excellent curriculum and its focus on international business. Students hoping to work in the government or non-profit sector may look for a program through the School of International Service while those hoping to work in the media may consider a degree from the School of Communication. In the School of Public Affairs, programs related to public administration and policy are offered. Law students take courses through the Washington College of Law. Finally, the School of Professional & Extended Studies provides opportunities for internships and international study.

American University is known for its small class sizes and the quality of its faculty. The study body is diverse, with citizens of more than 130 countries being represented. The majority of students participate in an internship while an undergraduate at American University, while more than half of them take an opportunity to study abroad.

The college's location in Washington, D.C. serves its students well. Not only do they enjoy access to some of the world's best museums and libraries, but they also have the opportunity to engage in political and humanitarian efforts. The bustling Office of Campus Life ensures that students are always active, involved and informed.
