Serving the San Francisco Bay area with a main 342-acre urban campus in downtown Hayward Hills with satellite locations in Concord and Oakland, California State University – East Bay is a comprehensive high-access public institution with more than 13,000 students from over 80 countries worldwide. Consistently named as a "Best in the West" college by the prestigious Princeton Review, Cal State East Bay is currently ranked as the 90th best college and 37th top public school in the West by the U.S. News and World Report.

Since being founded in 1957 to serve the higher education needs of Alameda and Contra Costa counties, California State University – East Bay has grown into a top-tier master's degree-granting institution for the region. CSUEB is fully accredited by the Western Association of Colleges and Schools (WASC) to offer 136 undergraduate and 60 graduate areas of study. While the university is best known for its bioinformatics, life sciences, and technology programs, East Bay is also known for its strong Education Department where a large percentage of California teachers receive their credentials for certification.

At Cal State East Bay, students have the ability to participate in over 90 academic, athletic, Greek, honor, religious, recreational, student government, and cultural student-run organizations. For those who are athletically inclined, the CSUEB Pioneers also fields six men's and nine women's varsity teams for competition in the NCAA Division II California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Notable former Pioneers include comedian Mark Curry, MLB player Jay Kleven, author Suzy Kline, sports analyst Joe Morgan, and prominent education policy maker Susan B. Neuman.
